Burgundy:    One White + One Red
2023 Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil Corton-Charlemagne (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru)

2023 Domaine Maratray-Dubreuil Corton-Charlemagne
(France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune) $178
We've been searching for a bottle of Corton-Charlemagne that would retail for under $200 all year; last year too. Let's rephrase: A GOOD bottle. Finally we came across this beauty. Opulent but with gorgeous minerality, balanced acidity, orchard fruit mingling with citrus blossom and pineapple, a complete example of Corton-Charlemagne with remarkable concentration and finesse.

This wine recalls our first sip & reaction 20 years ago from this legendary vineyard: "There's no way this is Chardonnay!"
But it is Chardonnay; gorgeous, beautiful Chard.
Let the weekend begin.
2022 Domaine Gaston et Pierre Ravaut Ladoix (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix)

2022 Domaine Gaston et Pierre Ravaut Ladoix
(France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix)
 $52

Sometimes we do find a gem of a Pinot Noir that is not only reasonably priced but outstanding. Enter a wine from Ladoix, a appellation who was once associated with table wines but is now highlighted as some of the best value wines in Burgundy.

A luminous wine with great aromatics. Raspberry, wild strawberry, cherry, floral notes (violet, rose), alongside subtle hints forest floor. There's a savory spice plus a classic Burgundian elegance. Top of its class!

A Rare Grape from Piedmont
2023 Piero Benevelli Langhe Langhe Freisa (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC)
2023 Piero Benevelli Freisa
(Italy, Piedmont, Langhe) $24
Throughout the.18th and 19th century the population of Piedmont sang the praises of Freisa; hardy, disease resistance, and always reliable yields. It's popularity declined in the 20th century having been overshadowed by Nebbiolo, the new rising star.
Today a handful of producers hold on to tradition, bottling tiny amounts of wine from this ancient grape.

Today, Massimo Benevelli, Piero’s son, has created a wonder here.

Tart cranberry, cherry, rhubarb with pliant tannins and hints of fresh earth + brambly old world charm lurks in the background.
White pepper, violets, black cherry emerge as the wine opens revealing a beguiling elegance on the finish.
This is a wine that would pair well with roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, and soft, earthy cheeses such as Époisses or Comté. But let's not forget a nicely prepared lamb lion too.
