Don't Say, Morocco?
2024
La Ferme Rouge Rose Le Gris
(Morocco, Rabat/Casablanca, Zaër) $18
**First
a clarification: La Ferme Rouge is the
name of the winery; this is a Rose not a
red.
And now we present:
"Le
Gris", as it is called, is a dry Rosé
primarily made from Cinsault (sometimes
with Grenache Gris), grown organically on
red clay and ancient sand soils with
limestone and shale subsoils. The wine is
crafted with minimal intervention: grapes
are hand-harvested, gently macerated to
preserve aroma and freshness, and
fermented in stainless steel with low
sulfite use.
"Pale
strawberry and spice", were our first
notes on this wine. Then "saline-spiced
purity emerges". A little further on
"exotic melon, finger lime,
peach/nectarine". We recall the finish
with speed, as in, we drained the bottle
very quickly. This Rose is a perfect
Summer sipper; also worthy of pairing with
your finest Moroccan dishes.

Dabouki? Why Not!
2022
Cremisan Cellars Dabouki
(Palestine, Bethlehem)
$30
We
have to admit this is our first taste of a
wine made from the Dabouki grape. The wine
is the equivalent of a walk-off homerun;
game over. Fresh, zesty citrus, explosive
flavor, gorgeous depth, melon, apricot,
Anjou pear, salty minerality, with enough
body to stand up to a sumac roast chicken.
Most unusual grape-find so far this year.

Riesling
+ Schiava =
2023
Matić Kerner (Slovenia)
$26
...you
guessed it: Kerner. The grape was
developed in 1929 by August Herold as he
sought to combine the aromatic qualities
and acidity of Riesling with the cold
hardiness and high yield of Schiava.
Kerner was born. Until recently though,
we've only tasted the grape from the
Dolomiti region of Italy. So it was a very
pleasant surprise to find a Slovenian
example.
There's beautiful floral notes, shyly
ripened tropical fruit, and spice on the
nose. On the palate we found
mango/pineapple that was refreshingly
underipe, good acidity and texture, then a
herbal component waffed through. The
finish is extensive. Greek salad for this
one sprinkled with a hint of oregano, or
grilled swordfish. And again, roast
chicken goes with almost anything.

There's
a Story Here:
2021
Karim Vionnet Beaujolais-Villages
(France, Burgundy, Beaujolais) $22
Karim's
story is pretty cool. Born in Lyon
to Arabic parents, he was adopted by a
family in one of the Beaujolais Cru
villages, Morgon. His first career
was a baker, but eventually fell into
wine, as one does in this region, and got
the wine bug by working as a vineyard-hand
and winemaker for some of the OG wine
dudes like Guy Breton and Marcel Lapierre.
Technically a negociant, Karim is
responsible for the organic farming and
vinification of 5 hectares of plots around
Beaujolais, mostly old-ish vines (40- to
60-year-old). He makes a bunch of
different Gamay cuvees, all with carbonic
maceration, that are insanely good (and
sought after)
This
one is his (and our) daily drinker: a
clean and classic Gamay. Juicy cherry,
cranberry, boysenberry with a hint of
spice. This is a thirst-quenching delight.
Don't forget to chill a bit for maximum
enjoyment.

Karim Vionnet Chiroubles Vin de
Kav (France, Burgundy,
Beaujolais) $30
For
Karim's second wine we have Gamay from
Chiroubles, one of the 10 Crus; home to
the highest vineyards in Beaujolais.
Fresh,
lively, and bursting with aromas of
pomegranate seeds, rhubarb, black
raspberry, and red flower petals. Lighter
bodied with great acidity and notes of
wild red berries, spice, and mineral
undertones. Tremendous.
