Foillard Beaujolais

Foillard Beaujolais

Beaujolais icon Jean Foillard is among France’s most revered vignerons—a fact that becomes readily apparent when you look at the inventory of Paris’ wine merchants.

While these knowledgeable and well-connected sommeliers pride themselves on offering the latest discoveries, nearly all of them are just as fervent about Foillard’s work over the past four decades.

What the wine merchants and their customers know is that there may be no more consistently fine red wines in all of France than Foillard’s Morgons and Fleurie. Every year, Jean’s masterful touch captures his site’s magical terroirs and the unique character of the vintage with astonishing depth and purity.

In charge of his family’s domaine since 1980, Foillard is a charter member of the quartet of Morgon growers mentored by the great Jules Chauvet, father of the French natural wine movement. Jean’s méthode ancienne means tending his vines organically, a 3-4 week traditional whole-cluster vinification, aging in neutral oak barrels, and does not chaptalize, sulfur or filter his wines.

Even though there are now several growers in the Beaujolais cru villages making wines along similar lines, Foillard’s continue to stand apart. Clearly the strength and delicacy, fine structure, texture and terroir transparency that make his wines so sought after come from something within Foillard himself.

Renegade has been fortunate enough to carry Jean's wines these past ten years; from vintage to vintage we purchase extra bottles and squirrel them away with the purpose of offering his wines in small vertical packs.

Foillard Beaujolais
Today, we are offering his Cote du Puy from 2022 & 2023. Much like the Cisterian monks documented the best slopes and soils of Burgundy over centuries, it is widely agreed upon that Côte du Py is the heart and soul of Morgan. Not only is the Côte du Py composed of some of the oldest and most unique soils in Beaujolais, notably blue schist and decomposed granite, it is also the highest point in Morgon.

The 2022 has some serious depth and minerality, silky red fruit and citrus tones, floral and spice notes come through, with a grand crescendo on the finish.

The 2023 comes across with a slightly darker fruit profile, super aromatic, with verve and tension; it's young but wow is it already delivering! These are wines that must be experienced.
As always you may purchase the wines seperately ($62/bottle)
or you can indulge and secure a 2-Pack for $108.

Foillard Beaujolais

Moving along to the 2021, 2022, & 2023 Fleurie.

Jean Foillard’s Fleurie is a benchmark for Beaujolais, known for its purity, site expression, and natural winemaking. Each vintage reflects both the house style and the particularities of the growing season.

2021: Here we have a wine that is precise, balanced, with tension-driven structure. Medium-bodied with perfect ripeness, fine-grained tannins, and a backbone of tangy acidity. The finish is prolonged.

2022: This is a Fleurie from the top drawer. Slightly fuller and riper than 2021, with a silky, seductive texture and a sense of energy. Purity is emphasized in our wine notes.

2023: The 2023 is poised to be a classic, radiating elegance, floral notes, minerality, and balance. Superb with time.

We've boxed these into a 3-Pack for $190 (reg 212) that begs for an evening of Gamay exploration.

And if there's anyone out there that's a huge Jean Foillard fan an would like an out-of body (wine) experience,

welcome to the Foillard Five Pack ($280 for the lot).

As always we do not receive to many bottle of his wines, so call or email us if interested.
