Renegade Wines
Santa Barbara Wine Summer

It's mid-July and we have alot of wine arriving tomorrow (Friday): Basque Spanish Cider, Txakolina Rose, a brilliant Swiss White, new cuvees from Eric Rodez in Champagne, and a selection of Champagnes from Benoît Lahaye.

In the meantime the wines below are at Renegade just waiting for you, including a handful of 2007 Chateauneufs.
As always, read, relax, enjoy!
2024 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre (France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre)

Let's begin with a Superstar of Sancerre, Domaine Reverdy.
Good Sancerre has an irresistible charm to it. There's magic in the soils (Kimmeridgian limestone just like Chablis), dedication in the vineyards (organic, sustainable), and devotion at the winery. What's reflected in the glass is a real sense of place (terrior). Reverdy has this in spades.
The 2024 has intense flavors of white fruit (pear, peach) but also an abundance of nearly ripe tropical fruits (kiwi, mango). There's a briskness to the wine at this young age; a savory pull that's commendable on warm Summer days.
We're obsessed with a dish we call "Zucchini Noodles with Pesto add Prawns if you like". This wine is the perfect pairing.
2024 Domaine Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre
(France, Loire Valley, Sancerre) $44
Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling

This family run estate in the Mosel Valley produces tiny quantites of superb Rieslings; the type we love pairing with the exquisite sashimi at Teru in downtown Santa Barbara.
Today we received two Rieslings from the same vineyard, Graacher Himmelreich. The only difference between the two wines is the harvest time; the Spatlese was picked one week later. Everything else is the same. Which makes tasting these two together eye-opening; what seven days can do!
2023 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett $55
Superbly refreshing and complex with notes of spearmint, smoke, celery leaf, fine herbs, candied lime, and tangerine. This one's intense with mineral notes coupled with gorgeous candied citrus fruit. The energy and purity are remarkable. The finish is taut and very spicy; a splendid Kabinett, with tons of energy.

2023 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese $68
We're going to defer to Stephan Reinhardt from the Wine Advocate, partly because our tasting notes we're hastily produced (we were so astounded by the wine), and partly because Stephan captures the magic of this wine in words. Is it worthy of 99 points? In a word, YES!
The review:
"...Spätlese is very clear and intense yet also precise and flinty on the bright and well-defined nose that is intense without being bold and is characterized by its perfectly ripe and elegant fruit and delicate slate aroma. Lush and savory on the palate, this is a very intense, utterly mineral and  mouthwatering Spätlese with great energy and tension, enormous length and salivating complexity. This is an adorable and age-worthy showstopper and a milestone Himmelreich for Andrea and Christoph Schaefer. 7.5% ABV".

...mesmerizing (that's from our notes).
2021 Antonella Corda Cannonau di Sardegna (Italy, Sardinia, Cannonau di Sardegna)
2021 Antonella Corda Cannonau di Sardegna
(Italy, Sardinia) $30

Antonella Corda is a leading figure in modern Sardinian wine, known both for her celebrated winemaking heritage and her drive for innovation and sustainability. She is the granddaughter of the renowned viticulturist Antonio Argiolas and represents the fifth generation of her family's winemaking legacy.
Antonella has crafted a remarkable wine here. Intense red berry fruit, pepper spice, rose petal aromas, lavender and violets, this one is utterly distinctive...ethereal even.
This wine has been described as a 'poem' by some, and a 'stylistic dance back and forth between Etna, Pinot Noir, and a super-floral Barolo' by others. Either way this one is a must.
