The Wines You've Been Asking For:

1973 Lopez de Heredia Vina Bosconia 5 Ano ($99)
Ahhh the magic of Lopez de Heredia. It seems this bottle is harder to find than the grand 1964 Todonia Gran Reserva. High neck fill. Bottles in great condition.
Like the other Riojas, all came from a serious collector in Spain where the bottles had not moved from the cellar (purchased upon release) until our importer bought the entire cellar.
-

1970 Faustino Reserva ($96)
Beautifully balanced, this shows all the positive attributes of mature Rioja. This is still very alive, with deep sweet fruit that wears tobacco and meat accents. Anise accents the ultrasmooth palate. Full of complex flavors, with a lingering finish.
-

1970 Solar de Samaniego Gran Reserva ($94)
Earthy on the nose, but with some smoky redcurrant fruit and cherry cola on the nose. Sweet fruit and tangy acidity with an underlying herbality on the palate.

Additional Riojas:
-
1964 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 ($440)
-
1964 Lopez de Heredia Vina Todonia Gran Reserva ($775)

Our favorite vintage Barbaresco in ages:
-
2008 Di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga Camp Gros ($70 - reg $84)
The flagship wine of Marchesi di Gresy. Made from the grapes of Martinenga vineyard, and only in good vintages`s. 2008 was indeed a great vintage for Barbaresco.
Nose is very intense. Dark berries, hints of tobacco leaves, smokiness, herbal notes, earth..
. Many things going on, it`s even hard to analyze. Very appealing.
Full bodied, highly tannic, but not in a harsh way, infact very drinkable. Good acidity. Intense mouthfeel, almost electric. Some concentrated berries, but not sweet. Spices. Savory. Pleasing salinity. Even some smokiness. So utterly delicious. And the aftertaste is just ridiculously long; just goes on and on, and lingers with even more spices and meaty saltyness. This is a Barbaresco at it`s finest; powerfull, yet elegant; with uber-structure. Our fellow taster was 'haunted for days' thinking about this wine.
