The Renegade Seven: Cold Weather Wines To Warm Up With
-

2014 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Mt. Veeder) $125
Where to begin? Let
's quote a few reviewers first:
-
"An incredible wine that reminds me of a great vintage of Lafite"
-
"It’s a brilliant, classic, old-school styled Napa Cabernet done perfectly!"
-
"This shows the Mayacamas DNA"
-
Those are just a few of the praises that this wine received. We agree, this is a stunning Napa Cabernet. The winery began taking shape in 1889 and for 130 years it has produced some of California's greatest wines. We are honored to have their wines on our shelves.

2015 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain) $106
The O'Shaughnessy Winery holds a special place in our hearts. The views are epic, the owners Betty O’Shaughnessy Woolls And Paul Woolls
are lovely people, and the winemaker Sean Capiaux is a tremendously talented individual.
The vineyards on Howell Mountain sit at a high elevation of just under 2000 feet in red, rocky, volcanic soils. The wines are incredibly pure and well-balanced. Our favorite of the line-up is this Cabernet. Black berry and dark cherry fruit, hints of sub-continent spices, underbrush, cocoa nib...a wine that is impressive now but will age gracefully for decades.

2000 Chateau Lascombes
(Boredeaux, Margaux) $108
From the Renegade Bomb Shelter where it has been resting these last 16 years.
This beauty is undoubtedly the finest Lascombes produced in more than thirty years. Its deep purple color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of smoke, licorice, minerals, and black fruits.

2016 Domaine des Lises Crozes Hermitage equis (Northern Rhone, Crozes-Hermitage) $35
You probably recall the story: this Syrah is aged in old DRC barrels, that Graillot is one of the top Northern Rhone winemakers, that the price in undeniably fair. Did you also know that the wine is organic, 100% hand harvested, 100% de-stemmed, and that it's...wait for it...vegan? (it's unfined). Otherwise this is one heck of a delicious Syrah for cold winter evenings.

2010 Salvatore Molettieri Taurasi Cinque Querce (Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG) $46.50
Ian D'Agata, in his book 'Native Wine Grapes of Italy', makes a bold claim about the grape from this region: "Aglianico is one of the world's great red grapes..."
He finishes the discussion on Aglianico by recommending the best producers. Guess which one got the highest marks? This one.
A single-vineyard bottling, Cinque Querce, and the current release, this wine is explosive. Pure anise and black cherry flavors with a dense, full-bodied feel, tightly meshed with firm tannins and hints of leather, graphite, earth, Mediterranean spice, and a smoky mineral (if there is such a thing).

2013 Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino Piggione (Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino) $88
In Kerin O’Keefe's book,
Brunello di Montalcino: Understanding and Appreciating One of Italy’s Greatest Wines, we find that she adores this estate. It's one of the reasons we tracked down the importer and begged for a few cases. They were kind to us!
-
Since O'Keefe is the true expert on the region we will share her tasting notes with you:
"Fragrant and loaded with finesse, this radiant red offers enticing scents of tobacco, new leather, dark-skinned berry. The elegant structured palate delivers juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and orange zest set against well-knit fine-grained tannins. It's beautifully balanced, with bright acidity."

2016 Marchesi di Gresy Barbera d'Asti (Italy, Piedmont, Asti) $22
One of our go-to weekday wines, especially when the weather is brisk and we're sitting next to a roaring fire. Bright, expressive, with dark red berry notes. Violet and rose petal aromas. Lush and intense, with nice balance. Silky tannins, mouthwatering with an excellent finish.
