Who doesn't love a great, well-priced Red Burgundy these days?
Here's three thay are spot-on:
-
2018 Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais $15
First if you do not like Beaujolais, you'll like this one. There, we've said it. Second how can you go wrong with Kermit Lynch wine? And at $15 a bottle it's pretty sensational. The staff is hooked on this one and you will be too.
-
2017 A. et P. de Villaine Mercurey Les Montots $60
Aubert de Villaine deserves the accolades he receives. He is a reluctant hero, an unlikely trait in a man of such accomplishment, intellect, and inherent sense of noblesse. Heir to one of the most enviable wine legacies of all time, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the young Aubert was more interested in literature and law than wine. After spending time in New York working for an importer of Burgundian wines, he finally returned home in the mid-nineteen sixties to assume his role as co-director of DRC.
Not one to sit still, his own winery produces exception wines too (and affordable, obtainable, etc).
His Pinot Noir from Mercurey is exceptional.
A softly floral character combines with ripe and very fresh aromas of dark cherry, spice and pungent earth. Outstanding!
-
2017 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnsy 1er Clos du Verseuil $116
“The reborn Domaine Y. Clerget could very well turn out to be one of the great recent success stories in Burgundy… Readers should do whatever they can to taste these wines. [Thibaud] Clerget is just 28 and appears to have a brilliant career in front of him. Bravo!”
–Antonio Galloni, Vinous
-
We can't argue with Galloni on this. The wines are elegant, delightful, intriguing.
This vineyard is a monopole located just below the village of Volnay and the Domaine Pousse d’Or estate.
The wine is brilliant, balanced, rich but with nice acidity. Notes of cherry with a charming floral side.
|

2017 Antoine Sanzay Saumur-Champigny (Loire Valley) $34
Biodynamic (and Bionic) Cabernet Franc from the genius who is Antoine Sanzay.
The wine is a deep ruby with magenta highlights, with aromas of black cherry, cranberry, black raspberry, violets, tobacco, and a hint of black pepper. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and full of acid-driven energy.
What a great, great wine.
|

2015 Domaine du Collier Saumur Blanc (Loire Valley) $58
Domaine du Collier is the property of young Antoine Foucault, son of the late, great Charly Foucault of Clos Rougeard. 2/3 of his vines are especially old Chenin Blanc and that's what's in this bottle.
Give this gem an hour to open (or more if you have the patience).
Honeysuckle, quince, melon and cantaloupe |

2017 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage(Northern Rhone) $35
Quintessential Syrah. Benchmark juice.
Alain Graillot founded his domaine in Crozes-Hermitage in 1985, and rapidly became one of the most in-demand producers in the Northern Rhone.
We love this wine with braised lamb shanks and white beans from a recipe in the NY Times.

2016 Luis Seabra Xisto Cru (Portugal, Douro)
$82
After a decade as winemaker at Niepoort, where he was responsible for some of the best known and highly rated wines to come out of the famed Douro, Luis Seabra decided that he no longer wanted to make wines to someone else’s specifications. Thus, he began his eponymous winery, and set about shattering preconceptions of what Douro wines represent.
This is a single soil field blend, from 2 plots planted in the Douro from 1920-1933. Mineral driven aromas of red berries, forest floor, green herbs and smoke. On the palate, lively acidity cuts through a core of fraise de bois, ripe strawberry and cherry, with excellent cut and precision to the wet stone and dusty minerals on the finish. Decant for an hour or three.
|

2017 Pierre Girardin Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres (France, Cote de Beaune) $116
He's the hottest winemaker in Burgundy right now, son of Vincent Girardin, and he just turned 21 (and the 13th generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy).
When Vincent sold his winery he kept 4.5ha of the very best vineyards and gave them to his son.
This wine is a rare village section of Folatières that is surrounded by 1er cru Puligny (Leroy owns the only other parcel of this section).
VERY WORTHY WINE!
|

2017 Domaine des Quatre Routas Muscadet de Serve-et-Maine (Loire Valley) $12
Let's begin with the pairings:
sautéed scallops or trout with beurre blanc sauce. It’s also exceptionally delicious with BBQ pulled pork and fried chicken.
A versatile wine, oysters on the half shell are pretty perfect too.
Apple and citrus are highlighted by a lovely acidity and a soft and enticing finish.
And at $12 you can splash a little into your sauce too.
